The Pii Operai Catechisti Rurali , ( lat . Congregatio Piorum Operariorum Ruralium ), religious symbol : POCR , is in Italy working papal Congregation law of the Roman Catholic Church . It was created in 1943 through the merger of two older predecessor congregations. In 2016 the community had 50 members.

history

The older predecessor was founded by Carlo Carafa in Naples in 1600 . The association initially called itself Congregazione della Dottrina Cristiana . The community received the first papal confirmation in 1606 by Pope Paul V. The statutes were finalized by Pope Gregory XV. Recognized in 1621. From then on the community called itself in Latin Congregatio Piorum Operatorum , in Italian Pii Operai . The news of the papal recognition reached the members of the congregation in the Neapolitan church of Santa Maria ai Monti , so they chose the Marian monogram on a mountain of three as the sign of the order .

The original field of activity was proselytizing the people in rural areas. The community around Carafa worked with success, which also led to the formation of an offshoot in Rome , where it has been based since 1687. It was assigned to different churches one after the other, including Santa Maria ai Monti since 1713 . The congregation built its own church from 1730, it is San Giuseppe alla Lungara in the 13th century . Roman Rione Trastevere . From 1760 a monastery was built directly next to the church, all construction costs were borne by Pope Clemens XIII. Today the monastery is the seat of the General Procurator and serves to train new congregation members. In addition to the popular mission, from Rome in Latium , there used to be the conversion of Jews and catechesis in the Roman suburbs.

The more recent predecessor congregation was the Associazione Religiosa degli Oratori Rurali (ARDOR, short: Missionari Catechisti Rurali ), founded in 1928, also known as Missionari Ardorini in Italy after the abbreviation ARDOR . The community was founded by Monsignor Gaetano Mauro and originally originated in Montalto Uffugo, Calabria . She also devoted herself to proselytizing in rural areas.

The Pii Operai had had personnel difficulties since around 1870, and in 1943 only one congregation member was on duty. Thereupon the Holy See united the two communities on June 28, 1943 to form today's Congregation. The current superior general ( preposito generale ) is Rosario Cimino POCR.
