Pilosocereus brasiliensis is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet brasiliensis means 'coming from Brazil'.
description
Pilosocereus brasiliensis grows as a shrub with upright or splayed shoots, is only slightly branched and reaches heights of 2 to 4 meters. The green to gray-green shoots have a diameter of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters and are only slightly woody. There are 4 to 6 ribs with oblique transverse furrows. The areoles on it sit on bumps. Long hair emerges from them. The initially reddish brown or yellowish brown thorns turn gray later. There are 1 to 3 upright central spines 1 to 3.8 centimeters long, which can also be missing. The 4 to 15 radial spines are 3 to 16 millimeters long. A part of the shoots capable of flowering is only slightly pronounced. The flowering areoles are scattered over the length of the shoots.
The narrow funnel-shaped, white flowers are up to 4.5 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits are up to 2 centimeters long, tear open at the sides and contain a magenta-colored pulp.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Pilosocereus brasiliensis is distributed in the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo , Bahia , Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro .
The first description as Cephalocereus brasiliensis was published in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1960 .
The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Pilosocereus brasiliensis subsp. brasiliensis
- Pilosocereus brasiliensis subsp. ruschianus
The subspecies Pilosocereus brasiliensis subsp. brasiliensis was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered and the subspecies Pilosocereus brasiliensis subsp. brasiliensis excluded from the list.
