description

Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus grows shrubby or tree-shaped, is sparsely to abundantly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 6 meters. The upright or leaning, glaucous blue-green shoots are woody and have a diameter of 3 to 7.5 centimeters. There are 4 to 10 ribs with horizontal transverse furrows. The translucent thorns are yellowish brown. The up to 3 central spines, which can also be missing, are ascending to protruding or curved and 1 to 2.6 centimeters long. The 2 to 12 radial spines are 4 to 20 millimeters long. Part of the shoots capable of flowering is not pronounced. The gradually expanding flowers are 3.5 to 5.5 centimeters long and up to 2.8 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters, tear open laterally and contain a purple to magenta colored flesh.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus is common in the Brazilian states of Pernambuco , Bahia and Minas Gerais .

The first description as Cereus pentaedrophorus was published by Cels in 1858. Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley put the species in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Pseudopilocereus pentaedrophorus (Cels) Buxb.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus subsp. pentaedrophorus
  • Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus subsp. robustus

The subspecies Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus subsp. robustus was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. low risk, classified. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered and the subspecies Pilosocereus pentaedrophorus subsp. robustus excluded from the list.
