In 1981 Pirelli achieved worldwide sales of 1.95 billion US dollars and had a world market share of 6.5 percent. In 1985 the Pirelli Group reorganized its production activities. The parent plant "Bicocca", founded in 1872 and at that time still on the outskirts of Milan, was meanwhile in the center of the rapidly growing Italian metropolis. The production was therefore outsourced and Bicocca redesigned to the new technology and basic research center. In this context, the German Pirelli site in Breuberg im Odenwald was transformed from a pure production facility for all types of tires to the main production and development center for wide and ultra-high-performance tires for passenger cars .

In 1986 Pirelli took over the tire activities of Metzeler and concentrated this brand on the motorcycle tire sector . In 1988, the American tire manufacturer Armstrong was taken over , thereby expanding its activities to the North American market. In 1991 the agricultural tire division was brought into a joint venture with the Swedish group Trelleborg AB , which took over the division completely in 2001 and still holds the license rights for the Pirelli agricultural tire brand today .

From 1990 to 1993 Pirelli tried to take over the German Continental AG . Accordingly, there was a lot of media coverage. The Continental AG tried to prevent the hostile takeover. This succeeded because a defensive front under the leadership of Deutsche Bank acquired a blocking minority and Pirelli ran out of liquidity after a long struggle.

Pirelli Germany

As a subsidiary of the Pirelli Group, which operates worldwide, Pirelli Deutschland GmbH produces car and motorcycle tires for the high and ultra-high-performance sectors. The production of car tires in Germany takes place at the Breuberg site in southern Hesse. The tires produced there are primarily supplied to automobile manufacturers as original equipment. In addition, a large proportion of the tires are manufactured for the replacement market.

The roots of today's Pirelli Deutschland GmbH go back to 1903, when the inventor of the tread pattern for bicycle tires , Friedrich Veith (1860–1908), set up his own business and founded Veith & Co. in Sandbach in the Odenwald . In 1906 this became the Veithwerke Aktiengesellschaft . With the production of tires and tubes for bicycles, motorcycles and automobiles, the number of employees was increased to 1000 by 1939.

After the Second World War , the production of 'Veith Gummiwerke GmbH' was resumed in 1946. In 1963, the Pirelli Group acquired the majority stake in Veith Gummiwerke GmbH with the simultaneous conversion into Veith-Pirelli GmbH . In 1986, when the Pirelli subsidiaries were reorganized in Germany, the Pirelli Reifenwerke (PRW) were founded, which, together with the other Pirelli companies operating in Germany, are managed under the umbrella of Pirelli Deutschland GmbH .

electric wire

By taking over cable production from Siemens in Berlin, Schwerin and Neustadt near Coburg and other production facilities in Great Britain, Pirelli was for a time the largest European manufacturer of power and telecommunications cables.

After an unsuccessful search for an interested party in the cable division who could obtain approval from the antitrust authorities , cable production was completely sold to the newly founded company Prysmian in mid-2005 in order to finance further significant investments in the tire sector.

Broadband

Pirelli has also been active in the field of high-speed data connections since 2000 .

The shareholders of the holding company Cam Finanziaria (Camfin), which owns 26.2% of the shares in Pirelli, are half Rosneft, the Italian banks Intesa Sanpaolo and Unicredit and an investment company owned by Pirelli Chairman of the Board of Directors Marco Tronchetti Provera.

China National Chemical Corporation joins the company

On March 23, 2015, it was announced that the Chinese state-owned company ChemChina was planning a full takeover of Pirelli. The tire division of the Chinese initially acquired the 26.2% share previously held by the investment company Camfin . The group was then taken over in full through a public takeover offer of 15 euros per share. The purchase price amounts to a total of 7.1 billion euros. The delisting of the Pirelli shares from the Milan Stock Exchange took place on November 6, 2015. In October 2017, Pirelli was listed on the stock exchange again by ChemChina, the stake in ChemChina thus fell to 45.52%.
