The French painter Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) is considered to be the father of impressionism, who in a later creative phase also created works of pointillism for around two years but returned to impressionist painting. The development of his work, from study sketches of his art education to his early salon painting , his turn to Impressionism and his old work in the form of the depiction of extensive cityscapes of Parisian boulevards was presented in the context of the exhibition using 64 paintings and 61 graphics.

The focus was on the rural and urban landscapes as well as the impressions of the ports that are so important in France that he created in the course of his life. The first pictures were created during a trip with his artist friend Fritz Melbye in South America and his birthplace Saint Thomas , while the last were taken in Normandy. Around 50 other pictures by Paul Cézanne , Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot , Gustave Courbet , Paul Gauguin , Vincent van Gogh , Édouard Manet , Claude Monet and other artists of this era were presented as part of the exhibition. Pissarro's work has always been shaped by his ties to the Impressionist circle with Cézanne, Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley , who can also be seen as important artists of this era.

The exhibition had more than 90,000 visitors, making it the third most successful of the Von der Heydt Museum in the past ten years. Around 2000 tours have been booked.
