Things seem to have changed fundamentally on their home planet, as monkeys now control the earth and keep humans as slaves. Pete is then supposed to face a gladiator Tolar in the arena. He succeeds in defeating his opponent, whom, contrary to all the apes' expectations, he does not kill.

After an earthquake, Pete and the gorilla Urko are buried in an old subway shaft. The suspicious ape has to work together with humans. Since Galen is injured, Alan and Pete want to nurse him back to health. To do this, they seek shelter with a chimpanzee family that the astronauts can make friends with.

As they move on, they discover a computer in the remains of an old city. Alan and Pete hope to go back to their time, but they discover that the orangutan Zaius, leader of the monkeys, and the gorilla Urko, who heads the military, are constantly hunting people, so the astronauts are constantly on are on the run.
