Plautia Urgulanilla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plautia Urgulanilla was the first wife of the later Roman emperor Claudius .

Urgulanilla, a member of the plebeian gens Plautia , was the daughter of Marcus Plautius Silvanus , ordinary consul in 2 BC. BC, and his wife Lartia . She had three brothers: Marcus Plautius Silvanus , who held the praetore in 24 AD , Aulus Plautius Urgulanius, who died early, and Publius Plautius Pulcher , who was elevated to the patrician class by Claudius in 47/48 AD . Like one of her brothers, she was named after her grandmother Urgulania , a close friend of Livias , the wife of Augustus and mother of Tiberius .

Around the year 10 AD Urgulanilla married Claudius, a son of Tiberius' brother Drusus . This divorced her (probably 24 AD in connection with the indictment against her brother Marcus for the murder of his wife Apronia ) on account of adultery and suspicion of murder. The son Claudius Drusus emerged from the marriage and died in childhood. According to the emperor's biographer Suetonius , he choked on a pear that he caught with his mouth while playing. Shortly after the divorce, a daughter was born, Claudia, who was not recognized by Claudius, because allegedly his freed Boter was the father.
