The Point Malcolm Lighthouse ( English : Point Malcolm Lighthouse ) is the only lighthouse in the interior of Australia , there in the state of South Australia . It may even be the only inland lighthouse in the southern hemisphere.

location

The 25 meter high lighthouse can be reached on a dirt track 18 kilometers off the Princes Highway north of Meningie . The tower is on private property that belongs to the nearby Polltalloch station .

The lighthouse was built in 1878 by Richard Treouth between Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert , opposite the Narrung peninsula, on which there is a small Aboriginal settlement .

history

In Australia's early years, merchant shipping played an important role on the Murray River to Port Victor , now Victor Harbor . In order to guide the ships safely through the lakes and to the port facilities on the Murray River , this tower was built at Point Malcolm .

The tower had a beacon that emitted a beam of white light every ten seconds with a range of ten kilometers at a height of seven meters.

The lighthouse ceased operations in September 1931. The concrete tower is in relatively good condition, as are the uninhabited buildings of the lighthouse keepers.

An automatic point light was later installed near the old lighthouse to guide ships in the river and lake system.

The settlement of Narrung , on the other side of the river, can be reached by a cable ferry that runs near the lighthouse.
