The Polizia Provinciale ( German  provincial police ) is a police organization that is maintained by the respective Italian provincial administrations ( self-government ). In the provincial equivalent metropolitan cities it is called Polizia Metropolitana . The provincial police forces usually have around 10 to 40 employees each. In 2014, around 2,700 men and women were employed in the provincial police across the country.

tasks

The main tasks of these relatively small police forces are to enforce the hunting and inland fishing regulations of the respective provincial government and the corresponding regional and national laws . In addition, they have been given various tasks in the field of environmental protection and traffic monitoring in recent years . As the executive body of the provincial governments, they can be used to enforce the decisions of the provinces. Although the police officers have their own specific area of responsibility, they have an obligation to prosecute any criminal offense they encounter in the course of their duties. The provincial police are integrated into the Italian civil defense system.

The vehicles of the Polizia Provinciale are usually white and have a green or blue stripe, which makes them look very similar to (old) German police vehicles.

history

The hunting authorities of the Italian provinces had their own game overseers since 1939 . In 1986 a legal basis was created that enabled the provinces to organize their gamekeepers in provincial police forces. By the year 2000, almost all the Italian provinces had set up small organizations of this type. The provinces of the autonomous regions decided against the establishment of such police forces , as they already had their own forest police authorities .

In 2014 and 2015 the Italian provinces were comprehensively reformed and the dissolution of the provincial police was planned. The employees of these police forces should continue to be employed in the city and municipal police forces or in other authorities.
