action

The story takes place in the late 1920s, during the reign of the Italian fascists . Pig-headed pilot Porco Rosso, a WWI veteran, is a bounty hunter who hunts flying pirates who rob ships. When Porco is on the trip to Milan to overhaul his machine, he is shot down by the famous American pilot Curtis. He survives and makes it to an engineer friend who repairs the aircraft. However, Porco is not thrilled that his friend is leaving the work on his aircraft to his granddaughter Fiona, but disgruntled it. The young woman turns out to be a real talent, which is why Porco takes her along as a mechanic out of necessity and at her request. During the flight and on his island, they get closer, illuminating parts of Porco's past. At the end of the film there is a competition between Curtis and Porco, which the latter narrowly wins. Porco then says goodbye to the talented mechanic Fio, whom he never sees again.

"Notes mixed ideas of Hayao Miyazaki") designated series of manga short stories about planes, tanks and warships from 1984 to 1990 in the model building magazine Model Graphix of the publishing house Dainihon Kaiga was published. In the course of the theatrical performance of Porco Rosso , the publishing house Hikōtei Jidai brought out a separate 60-page book ( ISBN 4-499-20595-6 ) in 1992 and again in 2004 with 70 pages ( ISBN 4-499-22864-6 ).

criticism

“The airplane fascinates him [Hayao Miyazaki], it runs through all of his works. In Porco Rosso he put this obsession into practice more meticulously than in any other film. […] The film shares the stance against fascism with Casablanca , including the melodramatic plot. In the end, Porco Rosso acts like Humphrey Bogart's Rick - because he lets go of the women he loves. "

- Markus Mähler : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Porco Rosso fails at a high level and mainly because of its own ambitions. The mixture of childlike drawing style, silly slapstick and a deeply tragic story doesn't quite work. However, it is precisely this ambivalence that makes Porco Rosso so worth seeing. It may be one of the weaker Hayao Miyazaki films, but it is also one of the most interesting. And even a weak Miyazaki is still a very good film. "

An ambivalent ending for a contradicting hero in the seaplane. "
