Port Angeles is a city in the US state of Washington and the seat of the administration of Clallam County .

The coastal city is located in the Pacific Northwest on the Olympic Peninsula , about 10 kilometers south of the Canadian border . It has 18,397 inhabitants (as of 2000) with 8,053 households on an area of 163.3 km².

The port was discovered in 1791 by the Spanish navigator Don Francisco de Eliza . In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued a decree establishing a town. Selling land was intended to raise money for the Civil War . When it was granted city charter on June 11, 1890, the city fathers named Port Angeles the "Second National City" because it was the second city after Washington, DC to be founded at the instigation of the American federal government. However, that does not mean that Port Angeles would be the substitute federal capital of the United States of America in the event of a crisis .

Car ferries run from Port Angeles several times a day to Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia in Canada.

Mention in the literature

In Stephenie Meyer's four-part novel series "Bis (s)" Port Angeles is mentioned several times.
