Portugal is an American documentary short film directed by Ben Sharpsteen in 1957, who also appeared as a producer. Sharpsteen was nominated for an Oscar with the film .

The fortress of Guimarães , the main symbol of Portugal's independence

The film deals with the people, the history, the culture and the geographical conditions of the European state of Portugal , located in the west of the Iberian Peninsula , whose territory also includes the islands of the Azores and Madeira .

Also on display is the fortress of Guimarães , considered the main symbol of Portugal's independence and one of the best preserved Romanesque fortresses in Portugal.

Production, publication

The film was produced by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by the Buena Vista Film Distribution Company . The film is part of Walt Disney's "People and Places" film series , which was produced between 1953 and 1960 and which produced 17 films. It is the tenth film in the series.

Portugal was first published in the US on December 25, 1957. In Japan it was published on December 25, 1958, in Sweden on July 3, 1961.

Award

Ben Sharpsteen was nominated for an Oscar at the 1958 Academy Awards for the film in the category "Best Short Film" (Live Action) , but could not stand up to Larry Lansburgh and the film produced by the latter, The Wetback Hound, about a young dog who runs away, push through.
