history

The Portuguese language Wikipedia was set up on May 11, 2001.

On March 1, 2003, the Portuguese-language Wikipedia exceeded the limit of 1,000 articles for the first time, on January 26, 2006 the 100,000th article appeared ( To google ), and on August 12, 2009 it reached the limit of 500,000 articles, with an article about the now abandoned city Ciudad Real del Guayrá in southern Brazil (then Paraguay).

The Portuguese language version has over 1,000,000 articles since June 26, 2018. Of these, around 16% are created automatically by computer programs , which is a relatively high proportion among the Wikipedias of world languages .

Number of photos from different countries at Wiki Loves Monuments

The Portuguese Wikipedia took part in the worldwide photo competition Wiki Loves Monuments on the media collection website Wikimedia Commons only in 2011. Almost 16,000 photos were uploaded that year.

Origin of the contributions and language variants

Where the Portuguese-language Wikipedia is read a lot, 2011–2012

At 84.3%, the majority of Wikipedia edits come from Brazil, followed by 9.1% of the articles from Portugal. The Portuguese Wikipedia can thus be seen as an institution of lusophony . Since 2009 articles are to be written according to the rules of the 1990 Portuguese Orthography Convention .

The relative differences between Brazilian Portuguese on the one hand and the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking African countries ( PALOP ) on the other hand led to two attempts in 2007 to operate their own Wikipedia language version. However, both of these were rejected.
