The Postbox as probably the “largest mailbox in the world” from Deutsche Post AG at Expo 2000

The Postbox (spelling: POSTBOX) was a pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hanover . Deutsche Post AG presented itself there as one of the twelve official world partners of the world exhibition .

Use during Expo 2000

The Postbox was the first pavilion to be completed half a year before the opening of the world exhibition and provided an overview of the exhibition area in advance. Over a million people visited the highest viewing platform at 43 meters on the world exhibition site during the expo. For this purpose, the visitors were able to open window flaps on the upper observation floor, which from the outside resembled the German mailbox fronts. Overall, 1586 “letterbox fronts” extended over the top three floors up to the ninth floor, but only a fraction of them could be opened to look through.

All the logos of the countries and postal organizations associated with the Universal Postal Union were attached to the outer facade . In the entrance area, 37 countries took part in an exhibition of real mailboxes , including mailboxes with Arabic and East Asian characters. The letterbox from Laos was a special feature , it was one of the smallest and made entirely of wood.

Inside there was a café on the fifth floor, where guests could enjoy the panoramic view of the grounds through the glass walls. The other floors were used for meetings and conferences, such as the International Post Corporation (IPC), an amalgamation of the 21 top-selling postal companies at the time .

The extreme athlete Hubert Schwarz started in the yellow jersey of the Post a month before the opening of the world exhibition on May 1, 2000 in Hanover on the 25,000-kilometer Bike-the-Future Tour through 21 countries around the world. He came back on August 31, 2000 on the official partner day of Deutsche Post.

The post box was also the motif of a special cancellation from the Expo.

Reuse

Subsequent use by BMW since 2006

The Postbox was later sold to BMW in order to turn it into a sales office. The renovation began in March and ended with completion in November 2006.
