Potzbach is a district of the municipality of Winnweiler in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

Potzbach is located in the North Palatinate Bergland not far from the northern foothills of the Palatinate Forest, about three kilometers southwest of the core community of Winnweiler. The eponymous Potzbach rises on the northwestern edge of the settlement area and runs in a west-east direction. The 399.6 meter high owl head stretches to the southwest of the village , but is already within the boundaries of the town of Otterberg . The hamlet of Leithöfe, located around two kilometers to the northwest, also belongs to Potzbach .

history

In the catchment area of Potzbach there is a Roman road that can be traced by means of ditches, as well as several primeval barrows. The place arose between the eighth and the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document on May 29, 1292 when it was donated to the Otterberg monastery . The existence of the suburb Leithöfe has been proven for the 11th century. For the duration of the following five centuries, Potzbach belonged, among other things, to the County of Falkenstein , with which it shared its history. Nevertheless, Potzbach mostly belonged to several rulers at the same time, for example the Lords von Randeck , Schenk von Schmittburg and Horneck von Heppenheim . From the end of the 18th century the place became the property of Falkenstein; The latter was part of the Upper Austrian Oberamt Winnweiler from 1782 .

After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the region and annexed it after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , the village belonged to the French department of Donnersberg and was assigned to the canton of Winnweiler . In 1815 the place belonged again to Austria . Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna in the same year and an exchange contract , the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . From 1818 the Potzbach community was assigned to the Kaiserslautern Land Commissioner in the Bavarian Rhine District , and later to the Kaiserslautern District Office . On December 1, 1900, the community moved to the newly created district office Rockenhausen .

In 1928 Potzbach had 279 residents who lived in 66 residential buildings. Both the Catholics and the Protestants belonged to the parish of Winnweiler at the time. From 1938 the place was part of the district of Rockenhausen . After the Second World War , Potzbach became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community moved to the newly created Donnersbergkreis together with most of the other places in the district . Three years later it also became part of the newly formed Winnweiler Association , before it was incorporated into Winnweiler on June 10, 1979. Since then, Potzbach has been one of three local districts.
