When the band was founded in 2003, the members decided to perform under pseudonyms and to build and maintain an image around these pseudonyms. According to official information, the band was founded by the brothers " Matthew Greywolf " and " Charles Greywolf ", who were asked by " Attila Dorn " during a vacation in Romania if they needed a singer. Powerwolf represented the first contact of “Attila” with metal, who until then had only had experience in classical singing.

A little later, the line-up was completed by “Stéfane Funèbre” on drums and the organist “Falk Maria Schlegel”, and since 2011 Roel van Helden from the Netherlands has been on drums.

The debut album Return in Bloodred , released in 2005, was supervised by Fredrik Nordström, who has already produced In Flames and Hammerfall . This went hand in hand with a record deal with the Metal Blade label . The publication was followed by a European tour with Gamma Ray and Nocturnal Rites as well as various festival appearances, among others. a. on the Summer Breeze . In the following year the band continued to perform at festivals, including a. on the Bang Your Head .

After a two-year studio break, the album Blood of the Saints was released in July 2011. The music video of the same name was released parallel to the single from We Drink Your Blood .

Later a contract was signed with the Napalm Records label . At the beginning of 2013, the follow-up album to Blood of the Saints was recorded in the German coal cellar studio , which was released on July 19 with the title Preachers of the Night . The album became the band's greatest success to date and reached number one in the German music charts for a week. The new album was followed by a tour of Germany with the four support bands Ashes of Ares , Wisdom , Battle Beast and Majesty . Appearances at Summer Breeze, Wacken Open Air and other festivals also followed.

In 2014 two box sets were released; one under the name "The History of Heresy I - 2004-2008", which contains the albums Return of the Bloodred and Lupus Dei and one with the name The History of Heresy II - 2009-2012 , which contains the albums Bible of the Beast and Contains Blood of the Saints . On April 15, 2014 it was announced that there will be a break from November to enable recordings for the next album, which was released on July 17, 2015 under the title Blessed & Possessed and made it to number 3 in the German album charts. The Wolfsnächte Tour will follow in autumn 2018 , consisting of twelve concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

style

The dominant language of the texts is English , but there are also Latin ( Werewolves of Armenia , Lupus Dei , Kreuzfeuer , Stossgebet ), rarely also German passages ( Moscow After Dark , We Take the Church by Storm , Werewolves of Armenia , Kreuzfeuer , Amen & Attack, quick prayer ) available. The lyrics of the band are shaped by the treatment of Christianity and ancient Romanian legends . However, Powerwolf do not see themselves as a religious band, but rather describe themselves as spiritual . In addition to the classic metal instruments, organ sounds are used. A church choir was recorded for the studio albums .
