The Praça de Touros do Campo Pequeno , in German bullring on the small square , is a multifunctional event hall in the municipality of Avenidas Novas in the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is located directly on Campo Pequeno - and is therefore often equated with it - and borders the Avenida da República . The arena opened in 1892.

history

The bullring on Campo Pequeno was designed by the Portuguese architect António José Dias da Silva . It was built between 1890 and 1892 after the former Lisbon bullring on Campo de Santana , which was in use between 1831 and 1891, was demolished. Da Silva based his design in the style of Neo Mudéjar on the Madrid bullring by Emilio Rodriguez Ayuso . An Angolan bullfighting has been held here since 1903, which Charles I had fascinated during a visit to Angola, because of which he tried to make it popular throughout Portugal by introducing this fighting style. However, this failed due to the centuries-old bullfighting traditions.

By 2006 the bullring was completely renovated and converted from a conventional arena into a multifunctional, covered event hall. Since then there has been a large shopping center ( Centro Comercial do Campo Pequeno ) and a parking garage under the hall . Since then, there has also been direct access to the Campo Pequeno subway station on the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro .

The arena has a circular base with four octagonal towers at each corner. The western tower is flanked by two other, smaller turrets and serves as the main entrance. The numerous windows in the building are shaped like a horseshoe. The event area in the middle has a diameter of 80 meters and is covered with sand. There is space for around 10,000 spectators in the arena.

Bullfights take place in summer, while the arena is now used for concerts and similar events in winter.
