Premyer Liqası 2007/08

The Premyer Liqasi 2008/09 was the seventeenth edition of the highest football -Spielklasse of Azerbaijan . The season was the last in which 14 clubs participated. For the 2009/10 season, the Unibank Premyer Liqasi was reduced to 12 clubs. The season began on August 9, 2008 and ended on May 17, 2009. FK Baku became champions ahead of defending champions İnter Baku .

A total of 443 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 2.43 hits per game. The two biggest wins celebrated champions FK Baku: at home they beat Turan 7-0, the same result was achieved in the away game at Bakılı Baku PFK . Before the start of the season, on July 8, 2008, the FK Masallı withdrew and was replaced by the FK NBC Salyan. On October 31, the club changed its name to FK Muğan Salyan . The league was played with a back and forth series, so that each club had completed 26 games in the end. The top scorer was the Uruguayan Walter Guglielmone from İnter Baku with 17 goals.

The top clubs

FK Baku won the championship for the second time with one point ahead of defending champion İnter Baku . As a result, the club reached the second round of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League . Together with runner-up Inter they scored the most hits (54) and conceded the fewest in the league with 13 goals. The third PFK Simurq Zaqatala was already 9 points behind the champions. İnter Baku and PFK Simurq Zaqatala reached the 1st qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League with 2nd and 3rd place respectively . Cup winners FK Qarabağ Ağdam moved into the second qualifying round of this competition . The fifth in the league won 1-0 against İnter Baku in the final. By three points, FK Xəzər Lənkəran missed out on fourth place in the European Cup .

The relegation battle

The last three places were finally occupied by the three newcomers. While successors FK Muğan Salyan saved themselves two points ahead of Bakılı Baku PFK , Bakili was relegated with the most goals (65), as did MOİK Baku PFK . This club only won five points in their 26 games and scored the fewest goals (12). There were no promoters for the new season because of the downsizing of the league.
