The Primera División 2017/18 (officially LaLiga Santander ) was the 87th season of the top Spanish division in football . It started on August 18, 2017 and ended on May 20, 2018.
The FC Barcelona was the Spanish champions for the 25th time.
Before the season
Real Madrid started the season as defending champions .
Newcomers from the Segunda División were UD Levante and Getafe FC , who managed to get promoted again after relegation in 2015/16 , as well as Girona FC, which was represented in the Primera División for the first time this season .
Season course
The FC Barcelona won for the 25th time the championship and beyond the Spanish Cup . Four game days before the end of the season, the Catalans could not be ousted from first place and ended the season 14 points ahead of Atlético Madrid .
In the Champions League , the club failed in the quarter-finals at AS Roma , Atlético Madrid won the Europa League .
The relegation battle was decided three game days before the end of the season. In addition to FC Málaga and UD Las Palmas , the champions of the 1999/2000 season , Deportivo La Coruña , had to make their way to the second division.
