Prosper Georges Antoine Marilhat (born March 20, 1811 in Vertaizon near Thiers , † September 13, 1847 there ) was a French painter.

Life

Marilhat, who comes from Auvergne , painted landscapes of his homeland before he came to Paris in 1829 to study with Camille Roqueplan . In 1831 he traveled to the Middle East . He initially accompanied the natural scientist Carl von Hügel . Marilhat stayed in Egypt from October 1831 to May 1833 before returning to France. He brought back numerous drawings from his trip, which established his reputation as a painter of oriental motifs. He also worked as a portrait painter. In the last years of his life he suffered from a mental illness before he died in an asylum in 1847.
