Pseudojuloides is a genus of junk wrasse (Julidinae) that is widespread in the tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific .

features

Pseudojuloides species are 6.5 to 14 centimeters long. They have an elongated, torpedo or spindle-shaped, slender body, usually 4 to 5 times longer than high, and covered by relatively large scales. The dorsal fin is supported by nine hard rays and eleven or twelve soft rays. The caudal fin is more or less spade-shaped. Characteristic for the genus are two fangs in the front of the jaw, followed by chisel-like or incisor-shaped teeth on the sides of the jaw. With the exception of the purely green Pseudojuloides argyreogaster , which lives in seagrass meadows , the secondary males are very colorful, the females are mostly reddish in color.

Way of life

Pseudojuloides species are agile, swim fast and live near the coast. Their habitat, however, is not the coral reefs , but rather areas in deeper water regions characterized by rubble. Like many other wrasse, Pseudojuloides species live in harem associations with a dominant secondary male and several females, which are difficult to distinguish from males in the initial phase.
