The Public Broadcasting Service ( PBS ) is a non-commercial TV network in the USA . PBS was founded on November 3, 1969 as the successor to National Education Television (NET), which ceased operations when PBS began broadcasting on October 5, 1970. The PBS is owned by the 348 non-commercial local broadcasters who, compared to commercial providers, usually have more freedom in programming.

The counterpart to the PBS in radio is the National Public Radio (NPR).

PBS and NPR are considered to be the American counterpart to the public broadcasters in Europe. Nevertheless, PBS is mainly financed by donations, with state subsidies also being granted, albeit under strong criticism. The federal funding will receive PBS on by the United States Congress established foundation Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the 2012, around 445 million US dollars distributed to various institutions.

In October 2012, presidential candidate Mitt Romney made PBS funding a topic of national attention in the first TV duel with Barack Obama (hosted by PBS). He repeated the announcement he had already made on an earlier occasion that he wanted to cancel the state subsidies for the CPB.

Among other things, “ Barney and his friends ”, “Dragon Tales”, “ Caillou ”, “ Sesame Street ”, Deutsche Welle Nachrichten, “ BBC World News ”, “Charlie Rose” and “Economics U $ A” are shown. The documentary film series P.OV (Point of View) is particularly popular .
