Puppis A is a supernova remnant in the constellation Puppis . It was created by a supernova explosion, the light of which reached Earth 3700 years ago. The supernova remnant appears to overlap with that of the Vela supernova , but is four times as far away.

Puppis A is one of the brightest celestial phenomena in the X-ray range . Observations with the X-ray satellite ROSAT made it possible to identify the neutron star created by the supernova from the previous star . This moves at a very high speed of 5 million kilometers per hour and is neither optically nor radio-astronomical detectable.

Observation history

Recording of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)

Puppis A was observed as a radio source around 1950 . Shortly afterwards, a nebula could be assigned to the radio source in the optical range , and a similarity to Cassiopeia A was recognized. Due to the athermal radio emission and the visual appearance, Puppis A was identified as a supernova remnant in the late 1960s.

The X-ray emission from Puppis A was observed with sounding rockets in 1970 and 1971, the latter recorded as Puppis X-1 . An observation by the X-ray satellite Uhuru with the reference 2U 0821-42 was published in 1972.

Puppis A is the subject of a large number of studies. Investigations in the infrared range were carried out with the Spitzer and WISE space telescopes, for example . The latter shows almost the same structure as in the X-ray examinations and a clear contrast to the older Vela supernova .
