When the Angels Swing Pure The Best of
No Angels

Pure ( English for Pure ) is the third studio album of the German pop band No Angels . It was released in August 2003 under the Cheyenne Records and Polydor labels and includes productions by Thorsten Brötzmann, Peter Ries and Lucy Diakovska , among others . The record reached number 1 on the German Media Control album charts and was awarded a gold record for over 150,000 copies sold .

background

After the successful albums Elle'ments and Now… Us! In April 2003, the No Angels released the preliminary single No Angel (It's All in Your Mind) , their fourth No. 1 hit in the German single charts. The band member Jessica Wahls was no longer involved in this production, she had previously left the group due to her pregnancy and subsequent solo career. In June 2003 the single Someday was released.

The album Pure was, like its predecessors, produced by a team of copywriters and musicians around the producers Thorsten Brötzmann and Peter Ries. The concept of producing the band members' own songs was dispensed with for this release. Only the song Sister was composed and written by Vanessa Petruo with Thorsten Brötzmann and Alex Geringas. However, the artists were involved in the discussions and decision-making with the producers about the selection of the titles.

In addition to the normal album, a limited edition was released in which each of the four band members interpreted a solo piece. From Nadja the title Soft Place to Fall , Lucy sings the song Confession , which she wrote , Sandy the ballad How Can We Be Friends and Vanessa the title Ten Degrees, which is also written by herself .

In September 2003 the band announced the breakup of the group. With the third release Feelgood Lies and the new edition of the single Reason from the album Elle'ments , the career of the No Angels ended for the time being . After the separation, the compilation The Best of No Angels and the live album Acoustic Angels , which only reached number 0 in the German sales hit parade, were released.

music

As with the previously released albums, the music can be stylistically assigned to pop music with elements from the genres of soul and rhythm and blues . Slow songs like the ballads New Beginning , Washes Over Me or the cover version Venus (originally by the Dutch band Shocking Blue from 1969) alternate with faster pop songs. The quartet also follows the pattern of the previous albums with the lyrics.

Reviews

  • Vicky Butscher for laut.de : “And how are you really? Actually as always, they are again performing the typical boy or girl group repertoire. [...] It would be best if the No Angels would concentrate on ballads in the future. Anyone who listens to “New Beginning” or “Washes Over Me” knows why. The "Venus" arranged in a ballad-like manner is also much more beautiful "
  • ProSieben review: “So now the third studio album is here:“ Pure ”. And that too will inspire the masses again - because it is not that different from its two predecessors. «We wanted to develop further and not stand still» says Lucy about the current Angel work, but this statement only applies to the rudiments of the 13 songs. [...] All in all, «Pure» lives up to expectations, with a few very promising pieces and much more catchy pop songs geared towards the taste of the crowd. But why should the angels also evolve? "Never change a winning concept"! The solid mass pop works and will continue to work. "
  • Esther Kogelboom - Der Tagesspiegel , on the separation: “You have run out of strength, Vanessa Petruo finally didn't get any more infusions. The No Angels are finished. As “burn-out syndrome” psychologists would probably describe the sum of the symptoms of which the five women told “Bild am Sonntag” (“BamS”): mind and body have been on strike, sleep deprivation, the resulting thin skin, hysteria, allergy , Inability to shut down. A year ago, Petruo collapsed while performing in Hanover, when there was talk of a fit of weakness. At the end of the day, the No Angels are at least mentally battered. "
