biography

Brian Schroeder first grew up in San Bernardino , California and began skateboarding in 1964 . He also began drawing between the ages of six and eight. He took a few drawing classes in high school . In 1970 he moved to Boise , Idaho . In 1978 he moved back to California and joined the local skater scene. However, he lost his job and moved back to Boise a short time later. The capital of the state at that time was mostly populated by Mormons , who had a great influence on the city's cultural life. Since he saw himself as an outcast at an early age, he gave himself the pseudonym Pushead ( German for "pus head").

In the early 1980s he began to design various flyers for concerts in Los Angeles . The hardcore punk band Wasted Youth took on a graphic as the cover for their album (without Pushead's consent). However, the album cover made him known in the scene and more and more people came up to him. A short time later, numerous works appeared all over the world. He also began designing skateboards and artwork for Thrasher magazine and had a record review section with The Puszone .

Pushead was the singer of the hardcore punk band Septic Death, one of the first American bands of this style of music. It was active from 1981 to 1986. At the same time he built up his underground label Pusmort , which in addition to the records of his own band also released releases of Onslaught , Poison Idea and Final Conflict, as well as various grindcore and metal samplers. The label was active until around the mid-1990s. The sub-label Bacteria Sour Records , based in San Francisco , where Pushead has lived since 1984, is still active today.

As a draftsman, Pushead is responsible for a number of band motifs. Among other things, he created various T-shirt and sound carrier designs for Metallica and The Misfits. These and the work for Corrosion of Conformity , Rocket from the Crypt and Dr. Octagon are among his most famous works. His subcultural, scene-related works are also known. Among other things, he designed the logo of the Better Youth Organization , artwork for various fanzines , as well as concert posters and flyers.

In 2005 he created a design for the Dunk Low Pro SB sneaker for the sporting goods manufacturer Nike . He also created a skateboard design for the manufacturer Superfishal.

Today Pushead focuses primarily on the design of vinyl figures.

The menu structure of the video game Guitar Hero: Metallica is mainly based on designs by Pushead.
