history

Pyry was probably founded in the 14th century and was long owned by the Służewski family. The community retained its rural character until the 1990s. Most of the residents were farmers or factory workers in Warsaw. More recently, the area has become increasingly urbanized and is increasingly becoming a preferred residential area for wealthy Warsaw residents who have their villas built here.

Pyry now enjoys worldwide fame through a (then) top secret meeting of British, French and Polish cryptanalysts that took place in the forest near Pyry on July 26th and 27th, 1939, i.e. shortly before the German attack on Poland , which triggered the Second World War . In view of the impending danger, the Polish Biuro Szyfrów (German: "Chiffrenbüro") decided to hand over all of its knowledge of the deciphering processes of the German ENIGMA rotor key machine , which the German military uses to encrypt their radio messages , to its English and French allies.
