Qarabulaq ( Kazakh Қарабулақ , Russian Карабулак Karabulak ) is a settlement with 12,496 inhabitants (as of 2020) in the Almaty region in Kazakhstan , not far from the border with the People's Republic of China .

The name is of Kazakh origin and consists of two words: qara means "black" and bulaq means "spring". The origin of the name may be due to the fact that the city lies on the mountain river Qara Valley , which carries very dark water when the snowmelts .

The settlement of Qarabulaq had several deep freshwater springs in the 19th and 20th centuries. The bottom of these water sources consisted mostly of quicksand and if a person or animal accidentally stepped directly into it while crossing or drinking from the source, he was hopelessly doomed to die. In the Kazakh language, people called these springs “bottomless spring” or “black spring” Karabulak (because a lot of cattle drowned in them).

The last two "bottomless water sources" were filled in by the city's residents in the 1960s.
