The Qark Lezha ( Albanian  Qarku i Lezhës ) is one of the twelve Qarks in Albania . It is located in northern Albania, has an area of ​​1588 square kilometers and 134,000 inhabitants (2011). The capital is Lezha .

geography

The Qark Lezha consists of Lezha as the historical and administrative center and the surrounding area and hinterland. In the west, the Lezha district borders on the Adriatic Sea . The mountainous Mirdita mountain range rises after the not too wide coastal strip . Important rivers are the Drin , the Mat and the Fan .

Today the Qark is divided into the three municipalities Kurbin , Lezha and Mirdita . Until 2015 it consisted of the three districts Kurbin , Lezha and Mirdita .

North of the Qark is the Qark Shkodra , northeast of the Qark Kukës , southeast of the Qark Dibra and south of the Qark Durrës .

The 2011 census shows 134,027 inhabitants for the Qark. In 2001 there were 116,109 inhabitants, which corresponds to a growth of 15%. The Qark authorities, however, named a significantly higher number for January 2007: 212,008 inhabitants.

In contrast to the other qarks of Albania, only 14.81 percent of the population in Lezha are Muslims . These are mainly Sunnis - added the 0.13 percent Bektashi , members of a Shiite- dominated Sufi order . 72.38 percent of the population are Catholic , 0.25 percent Orthodox , 0.06 percent Protestant and 0.01 percent other Christians. 1.09 percent are believers without religion and 0.13 percent are atheists . 8 percent of the population gave no information on religious affiliation in the 2011 census.

Politics and administration

The Qark Council (alb. Këshilli i Qarkut ) has 45 members.

The Qark has seven members out of a total of 140 for the legislative periods of the Albanian parliament beginning in 2009 and 2013 .
