District park Rosenfelder Ring

The Quartierspark Rosenfelder Ring is a new park created between 2009 and 2011 in the Lichtenberg district, Berlin-Friedrichsfelde district . It was created in two stages after the demolition of a school complex in connection with neighboring sports and green areas after a citizen survey on behalf of the district office. It extends over three terraces. With the completion of the upper area, the new park was inaugurated on June 5, 2010 as part of a Kiezfest (Countryfest LIBEZEM). The official handover of the middle and lower levels took place on May 28, 2011.

Location and history

In the 1960s and 1970s, the area north of the Alt-Friedrichsfelde street was transformed from a previous small settlement area into a residential area, especially for large families, due to intensive development with prefabricated buildings . For this purpose, in addition to the multi-storey apartment blocks , day nurseries , kindergartens (daycare centers) and two school complexes were built. Since the 1990s, there has been an age-related mix of the neighborhood residents, which means that daycare centers and schools are no longer being used to full capacity. Some were demolished after a long period of vacancy; With the location of the former 14th Fritz Schmenkel High School (Rosenfelder Ring 39) between the residential buildings, the basis for a new park was given. The resulting open spaces were intended to be used for recreational purposes, which is why the office for garden and landscape architecture Steffi-Regina Betz was commissioned with the planning in a simplified competition process . In December 2008 and January 2009 residents were able to take a look at the draft at citizens' meetings and contribute their ideas and suggestions. The most important idea was cross-generational use. A specially formed voluntary construction council advised the district office on detailed planning and implementation.

Park development: first construction phase

In the first construction phase from autumn 2009 to June 2010, the site was remodeled, a clear system of paths, rose beds and play facilities were created, and park benches were set up. In addition to the older trees that were already there, there were new plantings of ornamental cherries , birches and walnut trees arranged in arcs . Wild rose bushes and lawns surround the functional areas. The selected woody species guarantee varied effects throughout the year. The cost of 340,000 euros was largely borne by the Urban Redevelopment East program .

The name of the green area - Quartierspark Rosenfelder Ring - is based on the surrounding branched street and interprets " Rosen ", " Felder " and " Ring " in a completely new way through its design.

Park development: Second construction phase

In the next construction phase, which integrated the former sports field with the running track, a table tennis and football field , fitness equipment for senior citizens and other areas completed the new park.

The second parking ring around the previously created center contains several different ball game possibilities as well as a covered meeting point for young people. In addition, a special girls' area was designed with a sitting and balancing beam , a belt bridge for jumping and a round bench that can be used as a stage. This section is somewhat separated from the rest of the park area by bushes. In an outer, final ring, devices for training balance , endurance , coordination and strength were built into colored plastic surfaces . They are available to all interested parties, and instruction signs have been put up for their effective use.

The park on the east side can be entered or left barrier-free via the existing concrete path. The southern parking area is surrounded by a metal fence for security reasons. To the east and west, stairs lead into the district park. The inauguration of the fitness area in the second construction phase took place on May 28, 2011 as part of the 6th Country Festival .

reception

The entire park, laid out on three terraces, quickly found the desired level of acceptance from local residents. The cleanliness and safety of the large green area is checked by employees of the cityscape agency; they are also available for guided tours or as playground supervisors. The district mayor's walks in the neighborhood on October 8, 2011 made the public even more aware of the new park.
