Quillota is a city in the center of Chile. It is located in the Región de Valparaíso . It has 90,517 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geography and climate
The city is located about 48 km east of Valparaíso . It is the capital of the Quillota province of the same name . The valley of Quillota lies between the coastal mountains , which makes the climate semi-tropical and allows the cultivation of exotic fruits.
history
In 1536, Diego de Almagro was the first to enter the Quillota Valley. However, the valley had been settled around 2000 years earlier. In 1540 Pedro de Valdivia built settlements and had gold mined in the surrounding mountains.
The city was founded on November 11, 1717 as Villa de San Martín de la Concha by Governor Don José Santiago Concha y Salvatierra . August 6, 1822, the town received city rights.
Attractions
Many colonial buildings are still preserved in the city, some of which can be visited. The city has an archaeological museum, the Museo Arqueológico , which presents the history of the area.
The surrounding area of Quillota with its diverse landscapes is ideal for hiking. South of Quillota is the La Campana National Park with its 80 km². Chilean honey palms ( Jubaea chilensis ) grow in the northern part of the park . Gold was also searched for there in the past, and some disused mines are evidence of this.
economy
The semi-tropical climate allows intensive agriculture with exotic citrus fruits , walnuts , cherimoya , avocado and flowers. The wonderful landscape is also very interesting for tourism.
Mining with copper mining and two thermal power plants are strong industries around Quillota.
