The fortifications of Quilmes are located in the north-west of Argentina , in the far west of the province of Tucumán . It was built by the Quilmes people of the same name from the 10th century.

The largest part of the complex is located on a mountain slope in a niche, where the good overview was crucial in armed conflicts.

The ruins of Quilmes were discovered last century by Juan Bautista Ambrosetti , an archaeologist from the Universidad de Buenos Aires . The restoration of the complex began in 1978 by a research group led by Norberto Pelissero . Today it is criticized that the criteria applied seem more touristic than archaeological .
