The Río Bogotá is a tributary of the Río Magdalena . It rises north of Bogotá and passes the small town of Suesca on the northern edge of the Bogotá savannah . The further course in a southerly direction leads through the west of the cities of Bogotá and Soacha .

The Río Bogotá leaves the plateau a few kilometers after Soacha and, shortly after the town of El Charquito, plunges about 150 meters straight down over the famous Salto del Tequendama . In the further course it is a wild river, which covers a height difference of over 2000 m over a distance of less than 200 km to the mouth.

The large differences in altitude are used to generate energy in numerous hydropower plants along the river . Therefore, the Río Bogotá often has little surface water, especially between Soacha and La Mesa . The Tequendama case will then also almost dry out.

Status

The Bogotá River is one of the most by pollution polluted rivers in South America , probably in the world. It currently collects the waste and faeces of an estimated eight million inhabitants, as well as the entire industry in the south of Bogotá. There is a mechanical sewage treatment plant between Mosquera and Soacha , but it is completely overloaded. This can only treat four cubic meters per second (= 126,144,000 tons per year), but the city produces 438,000,000 tons of organic waste water per year.

For the renewal and expansion of the sewage treatment plant and the rehabilitation of approx. 90 km of the river, more than 1.2 trillion Colombian pesos, which corresponds to 7% of the city's tax revenue, have been made available. The Megaproyecto Río Bogotá project is scheduled to run for three years. The expectation is that afterwards the water of the Río Bogotá can at least be used again for the irrigation of the numerous agricultural areas in the region. The second phase includes building a $ 350 million new wastewater treatment plant, but only 50% of the cost can be borne by the city.
