Raúl Arellano

Raúl Arellano Villegas (born February 28, 1935 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ; † October 12, 1997 ibid) was a Mexican football player who played for Chivas Guadalajara between 1953 and 1964 and was part of the legendary team that formed in the nine years between 1957 and 1965 was seven times Mexican champion and was nicknamed "Campeonísimo". He was also known by his nickname "La Pina".

Career

Arellano was a striker and for years a regular at his hometown club Chivas Guadalajara, for which he worked for 11 years before ending his career at CD Tampico .

"La Pina" made his international debut on 27 December 1953 infringed Haiti (4: 0) and belonged to the cadres of the Mexican national team , which for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland traveled. Although the group consisted of four teams, not all teams from the same group played against each other at this World Cup. So it happened that Mexico played only two games, both of which were lost: 0-5 against Brazil and 2-3 against France . Arellano played both games on the side of Tomás Balcázar , with whom he formed the storm duo at the club in those days. But in the national team, Arellano, who only made nine international appearances in seven years, was unlucky and didn't score a single goal.

Raúl Arellano died on October 12, 1997 when he was run over by a car in his hometown. His son Omar Arellano Nuño became an important player in the Chivas Guadalajara team that won the championship title in 1986/87 (ninth for the club) and later worked as coach of the Guadalajara CD Tapatio, which is also under the control of Chivas. His grandson Omar Arellano Riverón is currently under contract with Chivas.
