Raúl García Zárate
Raúl García Zárate (born December 12, 1931 in Huamanga , Ayacucho region ; † October 29, 2017 in Lima ) was a Peruvian guitarist , composer and former lawyer .
Life
Raúl García Zárate grew up with six siblings and his parents, the grocer Dionisio García Medina and Silvia Zárate Palomino, in the regional capital of Huamanga. He started playing guitar at the age of eight while helping his father in the business, and gave his first performance in Huamanga at age twelve. When he was 14, his father died. He actually wanted to become a doctor, but this course would have been very expensive. So he studied after completion of secondary school for two years in Cusco literature and then at the National University of San Marcos in Lima Law , where he worked as a lawyer for 25 years. According to his own admission, he took this route to defend the rights of his family, but never abandoned art. He also says that he experienced a rejection of Andean culture among the Costeños in Lima, but that he decided to change this with his Andean-style music from Ayacucho.
Raúl García Zárate taught himself to play the guitar as an autodidact . In the 1960s he became increasingly successful with his concerts and in the following years made concert tours to Ecuador , Colombia , Bolivia , Chile , Venezuela , Argentina , USA , Mexico , Paraguay , Uruguay , Cuba , Spain , France , Hungary , Belgium , Switzerland , Germany , Finland , Sweden , Norway , Japan and China . In the 1960s and 1970s he often appeared with his eldest brother Felipe Nery García Zárate (1926–1986) in the duo Hermanos García Zarate . In 1966 he recorded his first record Ayacucho . In the following years more records came out at companies in Peru, Mexico, Germany, France, Argentina, the USA and Japan. He has also appeared in the theater, radio and television in Peru. This made him financially independent, so that he gave up his work as a lawyer around 1980. Together with Manuelcha Prado and Javier Echecopar , he also published a songbook, Música para guitarra del Perú , which is widely used in Peruvian music schools.
In October 2012, Raúl García broke his left arm in an accident while walking in the park, so that he has not been able to play since then.
Awards
Raúl García received the Condecoración de la Orden al Mérito por Servicios Distinguidos en el Grado de Gran Cruz and Condecoración de la Orden del Servicio Civil del Estado en el Grado from the President of the Republic of Peru in recognition of his contributions to the “living cultural heritage of Peru” de Comendador , from the Peruvian Ministry of Education Las Palmas Magisteriales en el Grado de Amauta and Condecoración de Las Palmas Artísticas en el Grado de Maestro , from the Congress of the Republic of Peru the Medal of Honor ( Medalla de Honor ) in the officer's degree and from the Senate of the Republic of Peru in the Commander's degree.
