The name of the community goes back to the landscape name the Rabenau .

Geographical location

Rabenau is located on the Lumda , a small left tributary of the Lahn in the geographical triangle of Gießen , Marburg and Grünberg . The community is surrounded by mountains between 320 and 400 m above sea level. The area between Lahntal and Vogelsberg is spacious . The Wetterau connects to the south .

Neighboring communities

Rabenau borders in the north on the municipality of Ebsdorfergrund ( district of Marburg-Biedenkopf ), in the northeast on the city of Homberg (Ohm) ( Vogelsbergkreis ), in the east on the city of Grünberg , in the south on the municipality of Reiskirchen , in the southwest on the municipality of Buseck , as well in the west to the city of Allendorf (Lumda) .

Rabenau consists of the districts Allertshausen , Geilshausen , Kesselbach , Londorf , Odenhausen (Lumda) and Rüddingshausen . The seat of the municipal administration is the largest district of Londorf.

history

The municipality of Rabenau was created in the course of the regional reform in Hesse on October 1, 1970 through the voluntary merger of the municipalities of Kesselbach and Londorf. On December 31, 1971, the communities Allertshausen, Geilshausen, Odenhausen and Rüddingshausen were incorporated.

From the Reformation to the Second World War, there were almost exclusively Protestant Christians in the region. The proportion of Protestant citizens is still very high today. About 10% of the population are Catholic, other religious communities are not represented.

In the mayoral election on November 26, 2017, Florian Langecker (CDU) was elected with 51.5% of the votes with a turnout of 64.8%. He took up his post on May 1, 2018. The other candidates, Christoph Nachtigall (Free Voters) and Ralf Lich (SPD), received 38.4% and 10.1% of the vote, respectively.

Justification for the coat of arms: The coat of arms was approved on July 30, 1971 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, which corresponds to that of the former municipality of Londorf. The coat of arms is a modification of the coat of arms of the family von Nordeck zur Rabenau , the red head of the shield represents the addition.

The Grünberg junction of the 5 federal motorway is not far from the municipal boundary .

The now closed Lumdatalbahn with the stations Londorf , Kesselbach, Odenhausen (Lumda) and Geilshausen ran through Rabenau since 1896 . The next train stations with passenger traffic are now Grossen Buseck and Grünberg (Oberhess) on the Vogelsbergbahn Gießen - Fulda , which are both about 12 km away from Rabenau. The Lollar station on the Main-Weser-Bahn Kassel –Gießen– Frankfurt , which is 14 km west of Rabenau, is also important for regional traffic . The nearest long-distance train stations are Marburg (Lahn) and Gießen , both about 23 km from Rabenau on the Main-Weser Railway.

The nearest airport (about 80 km away) is in Frankfurt am Main Airport .
