Rabiu Afolabi (born April 18, 1980 in Oshogbo ) is a Nigerian football player with a Belgian passport in the position of defender.
Club career
Rabius first football station was NEPA Lagos in Nigeria, which he left for Belgium in 1997 and switched to Standard Liège . There he became a regular player and was awarded to SSC Napoli for the 2000/01 season . There he could not assert himself and returned to the standard without any commitment for the Italian Serie A club. In 2003 the then Austrian champions FK Austria Wien secured the rights of the defender. With Austria he reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2004/05 , but was eliminated there against AC Parma . After the successes in Vienna, FC Sochaux paid € 2 million to Wiener Austria in 2005 and was able to bring Afolabi into Ligue 1 .
On August 29, 2009 Rabiu Afolabi moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg , where he immediately won the Austrian championship as a regular in central defense. On November 7, 2010, he played his hundredth game in the Austrian Bundesliga with Red Bull Salzburg (60 for FK Austria Wien, 40 for Red Bull Salzburg). After his second season in Salzburg , his contract was not renewed and Afolabi was able to look for a new club. A commitment to the Glasgow Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt failed and he moved just before the transfer end to AS Monaco in Ligue 2 . There he was supposed to use his routine to help the club aim for an immediate return to Ligue 1 , but it did not succeed. After being sorted out, he moved to the Danish first division club Sønderjysk Elitesport in 2013 , but his contract was not renewed after only five games, so that he has been without a club since the beginning of 2014.
National team
Rabiu Afolabi played an important role in the U19 African Cup of Nations in 1999 when he scored both goals for the 2-0 victory in the semi-final against Cameroon . In the final, however, he lost with Nigeria to the U19 team from Ghana 1-0. Then he was captain of the U20 national team and led them to the U20 World Cup in 1999.
He made his debut for the national team of Nigeria on June 17, 2000 in the World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone . He was also part of the Nigerian team that took part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea and the 2008 Africa Cup in Ghana and had two appearances in the group matches against Korea and Greece at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
