Radio ELWA

Radio ELWA in Monrovia , Liberia is the oldest Christian radio broadcaster in Africa . In addition to English , the radio station broadcasts in the languages Grebo , Kru , Gola , Bassa , Kpelle , Kissi , Dan , Krahn and Loma .

history

The station was founded on January 18, 1954 by American Protestants. ELWA is an acronym for Eternal Love Winning Africa . The transmitter was destroyed in the civil war in Liberia in 1990, rebuilt and destroyed again in 1996 in the second civil war.

The childhood friendship of the son of a German employee of Radio ELWA, Michael Jentzsch , with a local boy and his fate in the civil war is the subject of the book Blood Brothers , written by both , which made it into the Spiegel bestseller list.

The book also describes the time when 18,000 people fled to the mission premises to avoid the massacres and atrocities of the civil war .

2010 Radio ELWA broadcasts 1000 watts on FM 94.5 MHz and SW 4760 kHz (60 meters).
