Wheel noise absorber
Wheel sound absorbers are used on rail vehicles to reduce the noise emitted by train wheels.
Designs of wheel noise absorbers
- Radial sound absorbers primarily counteract rolling noise.
- Axial sound absorbers are primarily effective against screeching noises in tight bends, especially in local traffic.
Alternative or additional noise reduction options
An effective way of reducing the generation of noise by 8 to 10 dB (A) is to use whisper brakes . In vehicles in which the brake blocks act on the cycling surface, they contribute to reduced wheel-rail noise by - unlike the gray cast iron brake blocks that are still used as standard equipment today - they do not roughen the running surfaces of the wheel sets when braking .
