Rafael of Uslar

Rafael von Uslar (born November 15, 1908 in Kyritz ; † June 10, 2003 in Mainz ) was a German prehistorian .

Von Uslar attended high school in Kassel and Warburg / Westf. He completed his studies from 1926 to 1932 (initially law, later prehistory, geology, art and cultural history) in Marburg , Munich and Vienna with a dissertation on "Germanic ceramics in Central and West Germany" with Gero von Merhart in From Marburg. In the same year he worked as a research assistant at the Roman-Germanic Commission in Frankfurt and then at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn . Interrupted by military service, he worked there, most recently as a department director under Kurt Böhner . From 1960 until his retirement in 1975 he was Professor of Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Mainz .

In addition to his work on the Roman imperial era in Germania, his studies on prehistoric fortifications are particularly noteworthy. Von Uslar was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute .
