Rainbow Theater

The Rainbow Theater , originally known as Finsbury Park Astoria , is a Grade II listed building in the Finsbury Park borough of London . Built in 1930, it was initially used as a cinema and later as a concert hall. Today it is a church of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God .

history

When Finsbury Park Astoria opened on September 29, 1930, it was considered one of the largest cinemas in the world. The building on Seven Sisters Road in north London was the fourth Astoria theater in the city. The building was used as a cinema until September 1971, after which it was used for rock concerts , although the cinema had occasionally served as a concert stage as early as the 1960s.

After a brief interlude as the Odeon Theater (November 17, 1970 to September 25, 1971), it reopened as the Rainbow Theater on November 4, 1971. The opening concert was played by The Who , who later sang the theater in their song Long Live Rock , albeit under the name Astoria Theater.

On December 24, 1981, the Rainbow Theater was closed. The building was added to the list of listed buildings (Grade II), but remained empty for 14 years. Occasionally it was used for bare knuckle boxing matches.

In 1995, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God took over the building to use it as a church.
