Rainer Atzbach

Rainer Atzbach (born February 24, 1967 in Wetzlar ) is a German medieval and modern archaeologist and associate professor at Aarhus University .

Live and act

Rainer Atzbach was honored in the Hessian regional competition of Jugend forscht in 1982 for his work on the "discovery and research of a medieval court [near the Reichsburg Kalsmunt in Wetzlar]". As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he studied medieval and modern archeology, history and monument preservation at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , in Basel and at the University of Bamberg . In 2004 he received his doctorate for his thesis on “Leather and fur at the end of the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the modern era”.

As part of his academic work, Rainer Atzbach publishes, besides research on castles and costume studies , primarily on house research and ceramics .

Atzbach's previous professional positions were from 1995 to 2003 at the Chair for Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times, Bamberg (research project Stadtarchäologie Seligenstadt and DFG -Project Mühlberg-Ensemble ), from 2003 to 2004 the newly established subject area Medieval and Modern Archeology of the State Office for Monument Preservation Hesse . Then he prepared the Hessian state exhibition Elisabeth in Marburg. The service on the sick (2007) before, the results of his analysis of the excavations at the Elisabeth Church in Marburg flowed into the archaeological department headed by him . As a lecturer in medieval and modern archeology, Atzbach taught from 1995 to 2008 at the universities of Bamberg , Marburg and Gießen . On January 1, 2011, he accepted a position at Aarhus University , Denmark. Here he initially taught as an assistant professor (roughly equivalent to a junior professor ), and since January 1, 2014 as a full associate professor of medieval and renaissance archeology.

Department memberships

Rainer Atzbach was appointed to the Historical Commission for Hesse in 2007 , he is a member of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies , whose main board he was on until 2008, as well as the German Society for Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times , the Working Group for House Research , the Wartburg- Society for research into European castles and palaces and the Danish castle research forum “Magt, Borg og Landskab”. In addition, he is a founding member and member of the Science Council of the German-speaking Medieval Academy , an interdisciplinary specialist portal for everyday culture in the Middle Ages.

Political career

Atzbach has been a member of the FDP since 1986 and founded the Hessian party magazine Journal liberal (today's title YouLi ). During his time as deputy chairman of the Marburg local association , he ran in 2008 as a direct candidate in the Marburg-Biedenkopf II constituency for the Hessian state parliament . From 2008 to 2010 he was the deputy local chairman in Berlin-Wedding .
