Rainer Schönborn (soccer player)

Rainer Schönborn (born December 31, 1941 ) is a former German football player who was active in 1966 for 1. FC Union Berlin in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

Until 1958, Rainer Schönborn played in the junior team of the East Berlin company sports community (BSG) Einheit Weißensee . In the 1959 season he moved to the army sports club ASK Vorwärts Berlin , where he also played with juniors and later in the league reserve. In 1961 Schönborn returned to Weißensee , where he joined the fourth-class BSG Motor. There he played defender and was also used in games of the East Berlin city selection.

When BSG Motor was relegated from the city league in 1965, Schönborn moved to the second-rate GDR league club TSC Berlin. After its football section had been converted into 1. FC Union in January 1966, Schönborn made his competitive debut in the first team in the league game Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt - 1. FC Union (2: 2) in March 1966 . It was his only use, mainly he played in 1965/66 with the 2nd team again in the city league, with which he was city champion. The first team also managed to move up to the league, where Schönborn 1966/67 was also only called up in a league game ( FC Carl Zeiss Jena - 1. FC Union (5: 0)). He also had another cup game Union Berlin - Motor Köpenick (0: 4) made an appearance in the 1st team. Instead, he remained a regular at Union II until 1969. 1967 In 1969 he was again city champion with the 2nd team.

Then Rainer Schönborn ended his career as an active football player and began a career as a youth coach at 1. FC Union Berlin.
