Rainer Ulrich (born June 4, 1949 ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player .

Career

He began his career at VfR Mannheim , with whom he also played in the Regionalliga Süd until 1971. As a defender he played from 1971 to 1975 with Karlsruher SC in the Regionalliga and Second Bundesliga, after the promotion he played for KSC from 1975 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1983 in 121 Bundesliga games. After an injury that he sustained shortly before the end of the 1981/82 season, he was no longer used and ended his active career as a sports invalid. Ulrich was a typical representative of the pre-stopper for the 1970s, with a "rustic" style of play and only a few forays into the offensive.

He worked as a trainer for the amateurs of Karlsruher SC , SSV Ulm 1846 (1994/95) and the amateurs of FC Bayern Munich (1995-1998). From August 26, 1998 to October 15, 1999, Rainer Ulrich was a trainer for the KSC professionals, then he was replaced by Joachim Löw . His predecessor at KSC was Jörg Berger . He then coached VfR Mannheim several times (2001 to 2002, 2005 and 2005 to 2006) and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 .

In the 2006/07 season, Ulrich initially worked as head coach at the Baden upper division club FC Nöttingen , and from January 2007 at SC Fürstenfeldbruck ( Bayernliga ). From April 19, 2007, Ulrich worked as a short-term trainer at VfR Mannheim, and between July 2007 and June 2009 he was a scout at Karlsruher SC. From the 2009/10 season Ulrich was under contract with FC Bayern Munich , where he worked as an assistant coach of the second team and temporarily helped out as an interim coach. In the summer of 2018 he followed Tim Walter , who was a coach for the second team in the 2017/18 season, to the second division Holstein Kiel . For the 2019/20 season he followed Walter as assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart .

His greatest success as a player was in 1981 with the KSC in the first division , as a coach he reached fifth place with the KSC in the second division in the 1998/99 season.
