Rainer Wirz

Rainer Maria Bruno Wirz (* 2. February 1957 in Koblenz ) was a German gentleman foil - fencers .

Career

Wirz took part in international fencing tournaments in the following cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Bordeaux, Southampton, Moscow, Kiev, Naples, Beijing, Mexico.

In 1980 he reached seventh place in the world rankings ( Fleuret Hommes, Classemant de la Coupe du Monde ). In 1980 in Paris, in front of 3,000 spectators, Wirz won one of the most difficult World Cup fencing tournaments in the world, ahead of Angelo Scuri from Italy and Didier Flament from France .

He qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow in the sport of fencing, both in individual and team competitions. Due to the boycott of the Olympic Games by the Federal Republic of Germany because of the occupation of Afghanistan by Soviet troops , he was unable to participate.

Wirz was presented with the highest sporting award in Germany - the silver laurel leaf . This was followed by an inclusion on the roll of honor of the Königsbacher SC Koblenz and the OFC Bonn.

• Nominated for the Olympics in Moscow in fencing singles as well as in the team.
