Raitz from Frentz
Raitz von Frentz is the name of a baronial family that belongs to the German nobility . The Raitz von Frentz can be distinguished from the "von Frenz " dynasty family from the House of Limburg, which died out in the 14th century .
history
The Raitz von Frentz are among the oldest aldermen and knight families in the imperial city of Cologne . The Raitz ( Razo ) are first mentioned in a document in 948 with a witness from Bishop Wichfrid of Cologne. The secure trunk line begins with a ministerial from the Abbey of St. Pantaleon in Cologne, 1106–1154. In the Middle Ages, the family provided numerous mayors of the free imperial city of Cologne and members of their inner council, the so-called Richerzeche .
Rutger Raitz (II.) Was a knight and aldermen of the free imperial city of Cologne. In 1321 he was a member of the inner council and the Richerzeche. In 1320 he was envoy of the free imperial city of Cologne to the court of Pope John XXII in Avignon. He bought the later Raitzenhof in Drankgasse (curia Razonis). In his second marriage he married Ida von Heppendorf, daughter of Gerhard III von Heppendorf, nobleman of Cologne, and the Kunigunde von Alpen. Rutger Raitz (II) was related by marriage to a large number of the Rhenish and Westphalian dynasts. After the death of Rutger (II.) Ida married Count Ruprecht III in 1330 . from Virneburg . Her son of the same name, Rutger Raitz (III.), Acquired the Burg und Herrlichkeit Frentz (today: Frens Castle ) near Quadrath-Ichendorf from his stepfather, Count Ruprecht III. from Virneburg. It used to be owned by a noble family von Frenz , which had emerged from the tribe of the dukes of Jülich . From this possession, the gender took the name component "von Fren (t) z". The Frentz reign was initially an allod , i. H. free and not dependent on a liege lord , and lay between the Electorate of Cologne and the Duchy of Jülich-Cleve-Berg. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Frentz reign became a feudal dependency, part of the reign became a feudal dependence on the Elector of Cologne and another part became a feudal dependence on the Duke of Jülich-Cleve-Berg.
Members of the family belonged to the Rhenish knighthood . Belonging to the imperial knighthood was derived from the possession of several imperial directors. Since 1620 they have been with the Erbkämmeramt of the Archbishopric of Cologne invested .
In 1635 the line "Raitz von Frentz zu Kendenich und Stolberg ", which died out in the male line in 1746, was raised to the status of imperial baron. The rule of Kendenich came into the possession of the Raitz von Frentz at the beginning of the 16th century through the marriage of Robert Raitz von Frentz with Agnes von Orsbeck zu Kendenich. The castle and rule of Stolberg came into the possession of the Raitz through the marriage on September 28, 1648 of Ferdinand Baron Raitz von Frentz zu Kendenich with Odilia Maria Freiin von Efferen zu Stolberg, daughter of Baron Adolf von Efferen and Gertrud, née von Metternich by Frentz.
In 1512 Winand Raitz von Frentz married Maria von und zu Schlenderhan, whose family died out in the male line, and founded the line "Raitz von Frentz von und zu Schlenderhan", which is still flourishing today. Through this marriage, the Schlenderhan rule came into the possession of the family. Since then this line has carried the combined coat of arms of the "Raitz von Frentz" and the "von und zu Schlenderhan". The elevation of this line to the imperial baron status as "Raitz von Frentz von und zu Schlenderhan and Kleinenbruch" took place on July 15, 1650.
On October 25, 1652, the line "Raitz von Frentz von und zu Schlenderhan" was enfeoffed by Cologne Elector Maximilian Heinrich with Odenkirchen and the associated office of hereditary castle count of the Archbishopric of Cologne.
On June 11, 1672, the family received the incolat in Bohemia . Associated with this was the ability to acquire land-related goods, the right to participate in the state parliaments and to apply for offices reserved for members of the state estates.
The baron status was recognized on June 15, 1826 for Adolf Freiherrn Raitz von Frentz von und zu Schlenderhan and his cousin Emmerich Joseph Freiherr Raitz von Frentz zu Kellenberg as well as for their siblings by the Prussian government.
coat of arms
The family coat of arms shows a continuous golden cross on a black background. The crest of the coat of arms consists of the neck and head of a black bull with golden horns. The helmet covers are black and gold. The oldest surviving seal with the cross of arms dates from January 20, 1289 of "Theodericus dictus Raitze miles, civis Colon" and his sons.
The coat of arms of the Raitz von Frentz was increased on the occasion of the elevation of two lines to the imperial baron class.
On the occasion of the elevation of the Raitz von Frentz zu Kendenich and Stolberg line to the status of imperial barons, the coat of arms of this line was confirmed as follows in 1635: Square: Fields 1 and 4: A continuous golden cross on a black background. Field 2 and 3: In silver, two red rafters .
