The Nisporeni Raion is a Raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Nisporeni .

geography

The Rajon is located in the west of the country on the border with Romania along the Prut River . Its neighboring districts are Călărași , Hîncești , Strășeni and Ungheni .

The fertile hill country is used for agriculture.

history

The Nisporeni Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Ungheni District (Județul Ungheni) together with the present-day Călărași and Ungheni Rajons.

population

Population development

1959 lived in the area of ​​today's Rajons 52,060 inhabitants. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased continuously: from 61,903 in 1970 to 65,134 in 1979 up to 67,447 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 64,924 in that year. In 2014 it was 53,154.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up by far the largest ethnic group with 93.6%, while 75.8% of the nationwide describe themselves as Moldovans. The national minorities in Nisporeni district are the Romanians with 3.6%, the Russians with 0.5% and the Ukrainians with 0.3%.

Culture and sights

With the monastery Hîncu and the monastery Vărzăreşti, two of the oldest monasteries in the country are located in the Nisporeni district.
