Ralf Holtmeyer
Ralf Holtmeyer (born March 29, 1956 in Osnabrück ) is a German rowing coach . Since November 2017 he has been the head national trainer of the German Rowing Association (DRV). The German certified sports teacher has been working as a national coach at the Dortmund location at the DRV 's national rowing center since 1986 . Under his leadership, the Germany eight won two Olympic victories (1988 and 2012) and numerous world championships. In 2012, Holtmeyer was named Trainer of the Year by the DOSB .
Youth and education
Ralf Holtmeyer trained as a student at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium in Osnabrück in the rowing team of his school and soon also in the boats of the Osnabrück Rowing Association (ORV) on the Mittelland Canal . As early as 1975, the later qualified sports teacher dealt with training tasks in the ORV. During this time, well-known rowers such as Torsten Bremer , Ferdinand Hardinghaus , Thomas Möllenkamp , Hans-Günther Tiemann and Axel Wöstmann rowed in various boat classes for the rowing club in Osnabrück. In 1980 the rowers trained by Holtmeyer were able to convince with their excellent performance. The four-man without a helmsman wins the title in the German championship rowing and the four-man with a helmsman became vice-champion. In the same year, the eighth of the ORV at the International Red Sea Regatta in Lucerne qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Rowing clubs
As a rowing athlete, Ralf Holtmeyer is currently organized in the Hansa rowing club from 1898 in Dortmund. In 1989 he was made an honorary member of the Osnabrück Rowing Club.
Career as national coach
Germany eighth (1986-2000)
With Ralf Holtmeyer as national trainer of the DRV, the rowers of the DRV's “flagship”, the eighth of the men, won the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, after the boat had already won all regattas in the preparatory phase. This was followed by five victories at world championships with Holtmeyer as coach of the Germany eight. In 1986 Ralf Holtmeyer was responsible for the men's eighth in Germany, a symbol of German sporting success, the premier class of international rowing, surrounded by a myth founded in Rome in 1960 . Since taking over his prominent coaching role, Holtmeyer has been exposed to high expectations and media pressure in the German sports public.
In 2000, after the sporting objectives were not achieved at the Olympic Summer Games in Sydney , the deliberations and the resulting decisions of the management of the DRV showed that action was required in order not to have to miss sporting success again in the future. The eighth of the men had not qualified for the Olympic rowing competitions in Sydney. No men's belt boat reached its Olympic regatta finals in any of the competitions at Penrith Lake . The executive committee of the DRV decided to use the expected success dynamic of a coach change for the two "flagships" of German rowing, women's eight and men's eight, in order to achieve a repositioning in the upper performance range of the world's best. The responsibility and the tasks in the sports management and coaching area of the DRV have been restructured. Dieter Grahn became head coach of men’s belt rowing in 2001 and Ralf Holtmeyer, who until then had been head trainer for the men’s belt and women's skull area, took over responsibility for the women’s division.
At that point, Holtmeyer had been the men's eight coach with an exceptional track record for fifteen years. The rowers in the eight-boats trained by Holtmeyer won gold, silver and bronze at the Summer Olympics, and up to then they had been world champions five times. Like the successful coach Karl Adam , Ralf Holtmeyer had also set the standards by which the Germany eighth, as a “success boat”, was measured by the media and the German sports public. Regatta boats trained by Holtmeyer have been voted Team of the Year twice - each time the men's eighth place in Germany, in 1988 and 1989 - as part of the selection of the Sportsman of the Year .
Eight women (2001-2008)
After switching to the women's division, Holtmeyer primarily looked after the women's eight team . Among other things, the rowers were able to fight for the world title in the finals of the 2003 World Rowing Championships in Milan and to place in the finals among the first three boats to cross the finish line at three other World Rowing Championships: 3rd place in 2001 and 2002 and 2nd place in 2006.
Germany eighth (2009-2017)
In the autumn of 2008 the German Rowing Association once again had to take action, which led to a restructuring in the area of sports management and training for the national team boats. National coach Ralf Holtmeyer, after having worked successfully with the most powerful rowers of the DRV for eight years, again assumed responsibility for the men's DRV eighth, with the aim of reaching the final with this boat at the upcoming 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan .
It was not until July 2009 that national coach Holtmeyer went on the water for the first time with the eighth men he had put together in the traditional competition on the Rotsee in Lucerne . The rowers trained by Holtmeyer achieved their first victory. In Poznan , at the 2009 World Rowing Championships, the eighth of the men fought for victory in the final for the world championship title - three years after the DRV won the last title in the eighth rowing world championships. In 2010, the Germany eighth achieved two further first places in the two most important international rowing regattas this year: the 2010 European Rowing Championships in Portugal and the 2010 World Rowing Championships in Hamilton . In the preparatory phase, the national coach had already led the men's eighth to victories at the Henley Royal Regatta and to victory at the World Cup finals in Lucerne. The year 2010 then ended for the national coach with the fact that the winning streak that had begun in 2009 was appropriately recognized and after the disappointing performance at the Olympic Games in Beijing, the eighth was finally again the "parade boat" of the DRV, with the selected teams in second place in the The 2010 athlete of the year election came.

Wolfgang Maennig, another Goldacht rower in 1988, was chairman of the German Rowing Association from 1995 to 2001 and consistently pursued the goal of not nominating national coach Holtmeyer for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , which he did not succeed.
