Ralf Jaumann (born May 4, 1954 in Bietigheim-Bissingen ) is a German planetary researcher .

Life

Ralf Jaumann studied physics and geology and received his doctorate in 1989 from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. From 1991 to 1994 Ralf Jaumann headed the Experimental Mission Preparation Department at the Institute for Planetary Exploration in Berlin-Adlershof and, from 1994, the Planetology Department at the Institute for Space Sensor Technology and Planetary Exploration. Ralf Jaumann has been the director of the DLR / NASA Regional Planetary Image Facility in Berlin-Adlershof since 2002.

In 2003 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he was a private lecturer in the Department of Geo and Environmental Sciences from 2003 to 2006. Ralf Jaumann has been deputy director of the Institute for Planetary Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) since 2003 . Ralf Jaumann has been honorary professor at the Institute for Geological Sciences at the Free University of Berlin since 2006 .

Ralf Jaumann is involved in various space missions. As experiment manager and project manager of the HRSC (High Resolution Stereo Camera) camera experiment on ESA's Mars Express mission, on NASA / ESA Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn, as co-investigator of the camera experiment on ESA's Venus Express mission , as co-investigator of ESA's Rosetta spectrometer experiment on comets and as project leader of the framing camera of NASA's Dawn Mission on asteroids.

He deals with the origin and development of planetary surfaces as well as with geological processes in the solar system. During numerous research stays he worked at Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and at the University of Hawaii .

Awards

Ralf Jaumann has received several awards for his work, including the ESA Award : Contribution to the Mars Express Mission , the NASA Award : Group Achievement of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the Pathfinder Experiment Operations Team . On July 12, 2014 an asteroid was named after him: (25138) Jaumann .
