Ralf Urban

Ralf Urban (born October 6, 1943 in Wegscheid ) is a German ancient historian .

Ralf Urban studied history, Latin and Byzantine studies at the universities of Bochum and Munich from 1965 to 1971 after graduating from the Burggymnasium Essen (1964) and completing basic military service (until 1965) . In 1971 he received his doctorate in Munich under Hermann Bengtson with a dissertation on the subject of "Historical investigations into the Domitian image of Tacitus". Until 1978 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Munich, where he worked for Bengtson in 1977 with a thesis on “Growth and Crisis of the Achaean League. Urban was Professor at the University of Trier from 1978 to 1995, and from 1995 to the 2008/09 winter semester he held the chair for Ancient History at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg , where Hans-Ulrich Wiemer succeeded him.

Urban works on ancient historiography, the Greek history of the Classical and Hellenistic periods, the history of the Roman Republic and the Imperial Era as well as the Roman image of foreigners. For more than ten years he has been working on the project “The Gallic and Germanic image of the Romans in comparison” as a continuation of a DFG project (Collaborative Research Center 235) that has been maintained for over a decade . Urban was co-editor of the Trier research from 1981 (1–39).
