Ralph Rumney

Ralph Rumney (born June 5, 1934 in Newcastle , England , † March 6, 2002 in Manosque , France ) was an English artist .

Life

Rumney was the founder of the London Psychogeographical Society (also Comité Psychogéographique de Londres or London Psychogeographical Society ), which dealt with psychogeography .

At 17 he left home and went to Paris to avoid military service . There he had contact with the avant-garde art scene of the time.

In 1957 he was one of the founding members of the Situationist International group and represented the group's connection to London . In 1958 he was expelled again. However, he remained personally connected to the members.

Rumney was married to Pegeen Vail, the daughter of Peggy Guggenheim , until her suicide in 1967 . He then married the situationist Michèle Bernstein , the marriage later divorced.

He later lived in seclusion in Manosque / southern France . Former members of the SI got together again at his funeral. He is buried in the Montparnasse cemetery .

One of his paintings can be seen in the collection of the Tate Gallery .
